It was available in two body styles: coupe and convertible. Both body styles were characterized by their sleek, aggressive styling, which included a long hood, short deck, and distinctive "Coke-bottle" rear fenders. Under the hood it was powered by a standard 389 cubic inch V8 engine, which produced 335 horsepower. However, there were a variety of optional engine packages available, including a 421 cubic inch V8 that produced 360 horsepower.
The 1966 GTO was a huge success for Pontiac. It sold over 38,000 units, which was more than twice the number of GTOs that were sold in 1965. The GTO's success helped to solidify Pontiac's reputation as a builder of high-performance cars.
